Performance Note:
On the subject of ‘othering’.
We have far more in common with each other than what defines our differences. l’espace delves into the commonality of the space between us to shape a portrait setting of two souls pausing for a moment to find what is in common than what tears them apart.
Written during a time of extreme divide in the Australian socio-political landscape, this piece attempts to put a face - a voice - to the differences that were otherwise cast away. It aims to return humanity to the way in which we perceive the unknown, whether this rests in ourself, our neighbours, or an aspect of humanity that is previously completely abstract to one’s current understanding of the world.
The piece was composed during an early stage of my work where I would often place narratives and storylines in my motivic developments - treating them as a musical setting of magic realism.
An excerpt of the extended work is given above this description.
New edition (ca. 25 minutes) to be released in June 2024.
